Exhibition Pieces and Visiting The MFAH

Image
24 January 2018 Today we spent time in the morning creating the final presentation for this J-term, which will be shown to the rest of the community next Friday.  In addition to this, we have been working on compiling and editing footage from our trip to Austin, Texas to create a video which will be shown during our exhibition. Also, we worked on finalizing our pieces for the Art of Photography exhibition, by selecting photos which relate to each other, editing photos so that each collection maintains the same style, creating labels for them, and writing artists statements for each collection. In the afternoon, we spent time visiting the Museum of Fine Arts Houston to get a clearer idea of how a photography gallery is usually displayed. This way, we can feel more confident when determining how our exhibitions will be set up. Also, we spent time taking photos of some art pieces in the MFAH, and even The Wilson Tunnel, an underground tunnel which connects the two buildings of the MFA

Day 11: Prep continuation and Gallery Visits

Image
January 23, 2019 By Catherine Hudson The entirety of this morning was also spent working on personal projects, our J-term presentation, the exhibition and any other photography related tasks that needed to be completed.  In the afternoon we visited some galleries along Richmond Avenue and Kirby Drive. While we were there we gained inspiration on how to display and exhibit art. To conclude the day we discussed what we liked or didn't like about the presentations and how we would like to present our own photographs. Here are some pictures taken at the Laura Rathe Fine Art Gallery:

Day 10: Prep For Last Week

Image
By Jadyn Cleary Today we began our morning by doing a couple of photography exercises. One of the exercises was to pick an object and carry it to different locations to photograph. The other was to draw two photography techniques or subjects from a bowl then try to take a picture incorporating them. Subject Drawn: Words Technique Drawn: Fill the frame Object: Pinecone Object: Purple blob We then spent the afternoon preparing for our J-Term presentation and exhibition.

Austin Trip: Day 3

Image
Although we left Austin fairly in the morning on the final day of our trip, we still managed to fit in a bit more photography before leaving. After a homemade pancake breakfast, (well, made from pancake mix,) we went on a photography scavenger hunt. For the game, we split into three different groups and walked around the city looking to take photos of things on our list. The items on the list, which included things like an interesting statue or a person drinking coffee, seemed quite inconspicuous. Still, even in the city  environment it was actually a challenge to find everything. Along with the challenge of finding the subjects, we also had to make sure that we used our photography skills that we had learned throughout our time in the J-Term. This was a really good way to practice using a lot of different skills on many different subjects. After this activity, we finally packed up and returned to Houston.  Photo of "Cool Statue" Photo of "Person Drinking C

Austin Trip Day 2

Image
By Catherine Hudson On our second day in Austin, we woke up around 8.00 and cooked ourselves a breakfast of pancakes, eggs, and bacon. We also made packed lunches for the road.  We then drove to the Hamilton Pool where we spent the next few hours. The waterfall and streams there gave us some more opportunities to take pictures with the long exposure setting. The distinct teal color of the water also provided some cool shots. While we were there, some of us enjoyed swimming despite the cold water and, we later had a nice picnic in the sun.  After the Hamilton pool we then drove all the way to Enchanted Rock, unfortunately, only to discover that it was closed for hunting this week. This then led to an impromptu trip to Fredericksburg. There, we walked around and had fun going into some of the old local stores.  In the evening, we headed back towards Austin and had dinner all together at Red's Porch. Overall we all had a lot of fun on this secon

Austin Adventure Begins......

Image
Cassandra Wilson January 16, 2019 Today we began our adventure to Austin. When we first arrived there, we settled in our house, and traveled to downtown Austin for lunch at Hat Creek, which served burgers.  After lunch, we explored the botanical gardens where we captured many pictures of nature. Although it was a lightly raining, the mild lighting was perfect for taking close up shots of flowers and other plants. Some of these plants were even more enhanced by the rain, and others had many beautiful water drops attached to them. Also, we were able to experiment with the long exposure settings on our cameras by photographing waterfalls. Following this, we walked downtown to take photos of the city where we found many interesting architectural structures and brightly colored murals. As it it started to get darker, the trees and power lines became covered by thousands of birds whose loud chirps filled the air. For dinner

Day 6: Pets and Portraits

Image
By Jack Gross Today we began our day with discussing photos that we had taken previously with one another, critiquing them and then working on our personal projects. After lunch we had a speaker, Jamie Rivers, come in to talk to us about portraits, I learned about how leading lines can be used well in portraits and how to do that. We learned a lot during this time on how to take better portraits, we then moved on to practicing what we had learned on each other, and then coming back together to discuss the portraits that we took.  We closed off the day with many of us bringing our pets and going to Bell Park and taking pictures of them there, this proved to be a challenge as animals don't often decide to pose helpfully for pictures, as people do. This also caused us to have to increase our shutter speed as it was sometimes hard to make the animals stay still.
