Day 2: Composition and Story Telling

By Callista Wilson

Today Mr. Roddy shared a presentation with the class about composing a photograph, and how certain techniques can help portray a message. For example, we learned about creating seamless transitions between foregrounds and backgrounds by adding leading lines which direct the viewer’s eyes to important points. We also learned how to make photographs more aesthetically pleasing by balancing frames with either the rule of thirds or symmetry. Additionally, we learned how including people in a picture can contribute to the viewer’s ability to associate emotion with an image, and their awareness of scale. I found it interesting to learn that many people are naturally drawn to using these techniques, and we were each able to identify many examples of certain styles in pictures which we had taken in the past. Later, we walked to Bell Park and the Glassell School to experiment with what we had learned. In the afternoon, Jadyn taught the class about how to use photography as a means of storytelling. Specifically, we learned how to manipulate the composition of photos to develop a clear narrative and purpose. We spent time collectively analyzing and discussing many photos and then split into groups to create sequences of photos which tell stories. Overall, we learned so much today, and we all feel more confident when it comes to implementing different photography techniques that help portray meaning and depict stories.
